Tell us about your weight loss journey?
Before I can tell you about our weight loss journey, I would like to share with you our weight gain journey first. Josh and I are from San Antonio, born and raised! We started dating when we were 17 years old. I was a VERY skinny teenager and Josh was an average size of healthy. We continued dating into college and as our relationship grew so did our waistline. Much of our quality time consisted of us having Saturday morning breakfast at our favorite taqueria! Late night study sessions, and bad eating habits contributed to more than just the “freshman 15.” As we got older we learned it was much harder to take the weight off than it was to put on. We eventually graduated from college and began to climb the corporate ladder which often allowed us the opportunity to eat out (once more) “at the company’s expense.” Our jobs may have been paying for the bill, but the meals were definitely at OUR expense. We didn’t have good eating habits, and we had very little discipline to work off what we were putting in our bodies. As we began to prepare for our wedding we started to notice that we were not what we wanted to be, we didn’t want to be overweight for the biggest event of our new life together. We joined big box gym(s), We (I) tried unhealthy supplements, We tried portion control… nothing worked. As our wedding day arrived we were at our highest weight, with me in a size 18 wedding dress and Josh in a size 38 waist pants. That still didn’t change us. We saw the pictures, we knew something had to change… we just didn’t know how. The next year we gym shopped again, we bought bikes, he bought me an elliptical machine that I BEGGED FOR… we became members at yet another traditional gym, we bought Wii Fit, we tried p90X we tried and tried and TRIED… all unsuccessful attempts to even mildly move the scale in the right direction.
Eventually Josh’s job would open an opportunity for us to move out of our great state of Texas on to a new journey in the Carolinas. We moved in the Spring of 2011 and our life quickly changed. New environment, new job, no friends, no BIG RED, no favorite taqueria around the corner, no family cooking etc.
We decided we were going to beat the scale one way or another. Luckily for us, we moved to a part of the country where an active lifestyle is the “norm.” We lived in the mountains where people would often ride their bike on an 18.6 mile train 2-3 times a week. We were only a short distance from hiking/biking/running etc in one of the most beautiful areas of the country at any time of year. We continued to search for a fitness routine that would appeal to us. As we became more familiar with the city and the locals, we kept hearing about 9ROUND! Being from the Carolinas, 9Round is literally on every major corner in every city in both North and South Carolina. Josh decided to check it out and I decided to attend a nearby Zumba class. We stuck with our new routines for a little over a year. Josh quickly shed some lbs, while I lost some but nothing near as much or as quick as he did. Keep in mind our diets changed too, no more tortillas to start the day and definitely NO BIG RED. During the summer of 2013 we found out that we were pregnant with a sweet angel baby who we prayed long and hard for. As a first time super paranoid mom, I quickly became concerned with the amount of physical activity Zumba would require. Especially the jumping and gyrating! I approached the owner of the Zumba studio with my concerns, thinking that as the expert (she owned 3 different studios around town) she would help ease my concerns. Sadly she didn’t, she did, however, say that I would be welcome to freeze my membership until after my baby was born. That wasn’t what I wanted to hear, I had worked so hard to get on a routine where I would be committed to working out for 3-4 times a week for an hour I didn’t want to lose that. Shortly thereafter we received an opportunity to move to Charlotte, 2 hours north of where we lived in Greenville. With the popularity of 9Round across the Carolinas, it was no surprise that our new home would have a 9Round ready to welcome Josh right around the corner from us. He convinced his newly pregnant wife to join him for at least a first time workout. I was so nervous, and a little intimidated by what to expect. All of those feelings quickly changed when I was greeted by the owner and lead trainer, James. I explained to him my “condition” and my concerns and he did his best to ensure that I would feel safe and comfortable. I was so grateful for his patience with me and his confidence that I would and could be able to do the workout that his club became a part of our daily lives until I was 8 ½ months pregnant. Our experience with 9Round had completely changed our lives and we knew at that point we had to be a part of it. Not only did I weigh less on the day that I gave birth to my son than the day I married my husband but I committed to a program that worked!
What inspired you to open 9Rounds in Helotes?
Originally we were going to open our 9Round in Charlotte, we knew it would be easy to launch since most people are familiar with the brand. Our goal was just to add an extra stream of income to our thriving corporate careers. Life changes, plans change… 2 months before I gave birth to my son my mother was diagnosed with ocular lymphoma. As we prepared to buy our first franchise and have new baby, we now had the difficulty of navigating through the care of my mother who was 1300 miles away in Texas. After much prayer, discussion and more prayer we decided to bring our 9Round to our hometown. Family First for us… always! Because we had been gone for a short while we began to research our city and surrounding areas. We had the luxury of taking our time with choosing the right location. As we saw many many many great places to open our first 9Round, everytime we came to the Helotes area we saw someone we knew. We also liked the small town feel you just outside 1604. We learned a little more about the community and the area, and we decided that these were exactly the people we wanted to serve. When we arrived to view our location the first time, we noticed a large amount of parents waiting in the lobby of a neighboring dance studio, the best dance studio in SA, Josh quickly recognized one of the parents as a childhood friend. We knew this is where we wanted to be, in a business center where we could conveniently offer our services to people who don’t have the luxury of spending hours at the gym. We wanted to serve people who were like us!
What is the best part about working in 9Rounds?
The absolute best part about working at 9Round is that I get to work with my favorite person, Josh. There are many other great things, like building relationships with our 9Round family, making sure everyone always feels welcome and encouraged. Being a part of someone else’s success and seeing the progress from people who thought they would never be able to do it. Additionally, 9Round is a place where we can achieve multiple dreams at once. Josh has always aspired to be an entrepreneur, once even starting a small business that never made a penny.
We have both desired to be in the best shape that our bodies would allow. We just made a decision right before our son was born that we wanted to change the world. This just fit for us. There is satisfaction every day in knowing that we have the ability to change one person or member 9Rounds at a time.
How would 9Rounds benefit someone over the traditional gym or personal trainer?
A traditional gym doesn’t have Josh or Katrina. 9Round Helotes does! We care if you don’t show up, we encourage you to bring your kids and have them watch you live a healthier lifestyle. Traditional gyms are great, if you know how to use them. 9Round is a small portion of your day that provides you BIG results with your commitment. There are no class times, you walk in at your convenience, we start a new “round” every 3 minutes. The workout changes every day keeping your body in a state of confusion and keeping your mind engaged and excited about working out. There is always a trainer on the floor so you don’t have to pre-plan a workout routine, it will be all prepared for you. Trainers are there to demonstrate and keep you safe but more importantly we are here to motivate and challenge you to new fitness heights. We have a doctor-moderated nutritional plan and portal to answer all your nutrition questions.
What is one tip you could give someone who is struggling hitting their fitness goals?
Don’t give up, the struggles you have someone else has already conquered! Stay the course and be an inspiration to the next person. Even if you don’t see it, someone else will find great value in your journey and your success.
If you could sum up your fitness “mantra” in one sentence, what would it be?
There are 1440 minutes in your day, give us 30…. You won’t regret it! Get In Get Fit!
Something you should know about us…
In addition to running our 9Round we are passionately involved with community outreach efforts. We participate in numerous volunteer organizations that positively impact our community. We have our own non-profit 501c3 that is dedicated to removing boundaries that would limit a family from providing a faith-based education for their child(ren). It is called “The G Fund” you can visit our website on www.gfundtx.org. Josh is also a candidate for pastoral ministry through the United Methodist Church and is often called upon to bring a message of faith, hope, and love to the young people of San Antonio.
